Intellectual Property (IP) is a term that professionals in the industry often encounter in contracts. Since IP is accessible, have we effectively utilized resources to cultivate this domain? Adaptations, prequels, sequels, and spin-offs can be a vertical development of an IP, while horizontal development involves expanding the IP into different media, such as novels, comics, theater plays, and even merchandise, turning it into another form of product. This approach also connects the entire creative industry chain, maximizing returns for investors. In this Fireside Chat, speakers from various fields will share their ideas on how IP and film can mutually benefit and extend, offering Hong Kong content creators and producers a new way of thinking.

[Director Sharing] Breaking New Grounds : Evolvement and Future of Hong Kong Movies
Cantonese (with simultaneous interpretation in English and Putonghua)
Physical
Moonlight Theatre
In 2024, the Hong Kong film industry stands at a critical crossroads. On one hand, local film production is dwindling, and most Hong Kong films struggle to attract audiences. On the other, The Last Dance (破·地獄) shatters box office records, winning praise for its bold themes and innovative storytelling, drawing viewers from diverse backgrounds. Meanwhile, Papa (爸爸) redefines the crime-thriller genre, evolving it into a character-driven arthouse piece, which also resonates strongly with audiences. In the midst of a market downturn, these two successes shine like blossoms in winter, sparking reflection on the future of Hong Kong cinema. Is there room for growth in funding, themes, and market strategies? What direction will arthouse and family-themed films take? How can creativity and production break new ground? This session brings together key creatives and producers from both The Last Dance and Papa to explore the strengths and challenges of Hong Kong films today. They will discuss how the industry can leverage local identity and creativity to navigate through adversity and emerge stronger, transforming this winter into a new spring for Hong Kong cinema.

Sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative , the Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing (“the Organizer”) successfully organized eleventh editions of the “Microfilm Production Support Scheme (Music)” (“Support Scheme”) since 2013 to provide subsidy, training, mentorship and promotional opportunities for local advertising production start-ups and their aspiring directors to produce original creative microfilms that will showcase their creativity and technical capability. The Support Scheme also invited local singers to perform and offer their songs for use in the microfilms, with a view to providing more performance and exposure opportunities to them.
