Hailed repeatedly as one of the greatest Chinese-language films ever made, it set the tone for Chan’s career as a director, producer and, through his production company WE Pictures, tireless advocate of the Chinese-language film industry. He has won Best Director awards in the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Golden Horse Award, and the China Golden Rooster Award - the first director ever to have won the three major awards for Chinese language films. His films now boast 233 awards from 400 nominations, while Time Magazine named Comrades, and his martial arts blockbuster Wu Xia as one of the top ten films of 1997 and 2012 respectively.<br /><br />Chan, even though at the core a character-driven director, is comfortable in all genre: his musical Perhaps Love closed the Venice Film Festival in 2006 and went on to represent Hong Kong, China at the 78th Academy Awards. (Meanwhile, his drama Leap, about the Chinese women’s volleyball Olympic team, represented Mainland China in 2020.) His other films as a director include, Alan and Eric Between Hello and Goodbye, He’s a Woman She’s a Man, The Warlords, American Dreams in China and Dearest. Apart from his own creative work, Chan has been a lifelong advocate for the Chinese-language film industry, becoming one of the founding members of the United Filmmakers Organization (UFO) in the early 1990s, a co-founder of Applause Pictures, in 2000, and, in 2009, the force behind the groundbreaking WE Pictures, which supports, produces and distributes films from a range of Chinese artists.<br /><br />Leveraging his Thai heritage, Chan thrives not only in the Chinese film industry but also in broader Pan-Asian initiatives. At Applause, he spearheaded a drive to make Pan-Asian films for the region’s audiences, resulting in hits such as Jan Dara and The Eye series (including the US remake) and collaborations with directors such as Park Chan-wook and Takashi Miike. His recent endeavor seeks to collaborate with a broad spectrum of South Asian and Southeast Asian filmmakers. By forming solidarity with notable directors like Kabir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Banjong Pisanthanakun, Chan aims to foster cross-pollination with filmmakers across a wider range throughout the continent.<br /><br />His new film, She’s Got No Name (2024), marks Chan’s second time in official selection at Cannes after Wu Xia, a creative blend of martial arts action and detective thriller which premiered as the only Chinese-language film in the festival in 2011.</p>

His latest, WE ARE ALL STRANGERS, completes his 'Growing Up' trilogy and is the first Singaporean film in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.Through his company Giraffe Pictures, Chen is a prolific producer of Asian cinema, backing acclaimed films like POP AYE (2017), AJOOMMA (2022), and recent festival titles including HAPPYEND (2024), CROCODILE TEARS (2024), THIS CITY IS A BATTLEFIELD (2025) and SLEEP NO MORE (2026).</p>

Over the past decade, nearly all of his works have been selected for major international film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, and distributed worldwide. His credits include RESURRECTION (Special Prize, Cannes Competition), LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (Un Certain Regard, Cannes), KAILI BLUES (Best Emerging Director, Locarno), THE BOTANIST (Grand Prix, Berlinale Generation), LOVE IS A GUN (Lion of the Future Best Debut, Venice), and KARST (Best Film, Pingyao). He also executive produced THE WATER MURMURS, winner of the Short Film Palme d’Or at Cannes.</p>
